We all have something we really want to do but constantly find reasons not to. Maybe you’ve meant to start a daily walking routine, but housework always “must come first.” Or perhaps you’ve been planning to take up technology classes, but that one last work report always gets in the way. We’re masters of making excuses, convincing ourselves that some things are more important than others. But here’s the truth: achieving balance in life means prioritizing
the things we must do and the things we want to do.
We know the value of scheduling and planning. Using a diary to organize our time helps us accomplish goals. Theoretically, it’s simple—schedule your priorities and stick to them. Yet, even with a perfectly planned day, we often find excuses to avoid what we set out to do.
A Self-Reflection Exercise
Take a moment to reflect on the last five things you planned to do but didn’t follow through on. Write them down, and jot down the reason you didn’t do it next to each one. Be brutally honest with yourself.
Excuses aren’t inherently harmful—they’re simply choices. Some choices are valid and beneficial, while others may stem from underlying fears or distractions. Writing them down helps us see the patterns behind our decisions.
Excuses Are Choices
By understanding our excuses as choices, we open the door to self-awareness. Why did we choose not to do something? Did we replace it with something more important or urgent? Could we have modified our choice to make it more achievable?
Examining our choices gives us the power to adjust our actions, attitudes, and behaviors. This self-reflection is the first step toward inner balance and holistic health.
